To prove her loyalty to our family, yesterday the cat brought me a dead mouse and laid it at my feet. Because nothing says devotion like a dead rodent.
OK, so yeah, I used to be a flight attendant. I also used to be single. Then something happened. I got married. I had a baby. Suddenly taking those overnight trips didn't work so well. Then our baby was two and the day came that I got the last minute surprise call---"There's been a scheduling change. You have two hours to be at the airport ready for a four-day trip."
Um, yeah. That was the day. The last day of my flight attendant career. The first day of my new career as a full-time wife and mother. My new job didn't come with the benefits of free-time in quiet hotel rooms and sight-seeing in exotic locations. It didn't come with per diem, a pay check, adult conversations, room service, dinners at classy hotel restaurants, or even grown-up clothes and heels. Instead, it came with PB&J lunches, never-ending laundry, T-shirts with mac and cheese stains, endless Dora re-runs, and conversations with other moms about potty-training while making sure my toddler didn't fall down the slide at McDonalds (or push the kid next to him down it).
Now it's years later. That baby is almost 17. And when I look back on it, it's been a fun ride. Despite the sacrifices. Or maybe because of them. I've been married almost 18 years to a man I fall more in love with every day. I've got three beautiful, wonderful kids. I'm beginning to experience that old freedom again...the kind where my husband and I don't have to get a babysitter every time we go out and can actually take the occasional overnight vacation. Alone together. And the best part is that this time I don't have a job telling me where to be and how I need to work on this holiday or that day that I needed off.
So, yeah. I used to be a flight attendant and now I'm just a wife and mother. Well, it's more than that I guess. I traded handing people drinks for influencing three eternal souls as they become the people they will be for the rest of their lives. I'll take that any day.
CHECK OUT MY OTHER BLOGS!!! (although I haven't updated my writing one for a while)
